On
29th September, the Culture and Heritage Society of St. Columba’s School
organized an educational visit to Rakhigarhi, a prominent Indus Valley
settlement in Haryana about 150 kilometres from Delhi. Fourteen students from
Grades 11 and 12 were accompanied by the teachers-in-charge, Mr. Dennis Mathew
and Ms. Pratima Saxena. The trip aimed to provide first-hand exposure to one of
the most significant archaeological sites of early Indian civilization.
Upon
arrival, the group was welcomed by Dr. Appu Sharan, an archaeologist and expert
in excavation techniques. He guided the students through various excavated
mounds, explaining their historical context and significance. Artefacts such as
bangles, clay pots, animal remains, and traces of ancient habitation offered
valuable insight into the life and culture of the Indus Valley people and
deepened the learning experience.
The
journey began at 6:00 a.m. from Delhi and concluded at 8:00 p.m. the same
evening, with short stopovers for breakfast en route and lunch during the
return. The success of the visit was made possible through the cooperation and
support of Brother Robert Fernandes, the dedication of the teachers, and the
enthusiasm of the students. Overall, the trip proved to be a rich educational
experience, linking classroom knowledge with tangible historical evidence.
